How it started
Sometimes I’m inspired to compose by a feeling, an event, or even the weather.
This time I had no specific inspiration, but I felt that my next release should be fun with a jazz/blues feel. So I sat down at the piano and started to improvise.
Once I felt that I was on to something good I set up my phone to record it. Now I had something to post even before the real work started.
Into the recording studio
One of my previous releases, Flow, was completely improvised. It started on the studio piano and I was happy with the way it turned out. This improvisation was on the piano, which I enjoy much more, but a song recorded on a phone sitting on an 80-year-old piano isn’t release-quality. So it needed to be rerecorded properly. This also allowed me to chose the best parts to rearrange and expand them.
Two other changes you may notice. I switched to a vintage keyboard sound and slowed it down, giving the piece a laid back swing feel.
The title and video
Yes, it’s called Funn Jazz. That’s not a typo. Well, originally it was but I liked how it looked.
There isn’t really a message here, but I had almost as much fun making the video as I did playing it. Abstract shapes, flowing colors, repetitive but constantly changing. Which is how life should be.
