I’m continuing with my plan to release a new instrumental every month, and tell you the story behind it.
Okay, it’s been a little over a month, but there was a war and my studio is in our safe room. There’s a reason for that – as a sealed room it’s perfect for recording, especially late at night. However, it also means that sometimes the room has to be shared, in this case with my daughter and her 2 children who slept down here.
Once I regained my kingdom I was back to work.
How did I start?
This music is actually what we call repurposed. I had written a melody for a potential customer, but it wasn’t what they were looking for (it happens). Not one to let anything go to waste, I turned it into a piano solo with a different feel. Something that would reflect the turbulant times we’d just been through. I changed the moods during the song using major and minor scales.
I’m happy that most of it turned out major, that means I was in a more optimistic mood.
The title - A New Morning
The original song was about morning, so I decided to stick with that. I opened up a new file called “new morning”. With the mood swings I thought about “Night to Morning”, but I felt that it started and ended on a high note, and “Morning to Night to Morning” is a bit long. So I stuck with the working title – A New Morning.
The video
I confess, I sometimes use stock footage for my videos, just like video makers use stock music. We search for both with keywords. I looked for “sunrise” and “morning”, but nothing seemed to really fit. Then I scrolled through the “people” category and found this film of a women doing yoga on the beach at sunrise (or sunset, it’s tough to tell in 30 seconds). To me it represented the mood that I was looking for – getting up at the beginning of a new day. I added some storm clouds for the darker part of the music, then some more yoga to get up again.
Lovely, Kara. It really does evoke the sense of morning.
Thank you Mitch. I’m glad you enjoyed it.
